Many years of being in various journalism classes has taught me that the work of a journalist is never ending. They act as a running report, supplying an infinite amount of information and facts that are then supplied to subscribers, readers and viewers worldwide.
Writing is much more than an acquired skill for journalists; I think it is better described as an art. It is an art form for anyone to be able to “sell” the opening paragraph of a story to the reader, piquing their interest while still supplying the most relevant and essential points of a story.
Just as a magician has his secret, so does a journalist. Journalists tend to create their leads based on impact, conflict, prominence, timeliness, unusualness and/or proximity. These six things are what makes news, well news. An article on me could appear in The Miami Herald and could be of news because of proximity and human interest. I am a University of Miami student so I have proximity to the Miami area and I would be of human interest if the article was on one of my, oh, so amazing abilities.
News is an invitation to the reader to learn something new.
