Yesterday I looked into an advertisement on Facebook that has been popping up on my sidebar for a long time. It was an ad for wedding shoes. I just thought hey what the heck I will check it out just because and see where that leads me. After I logged onto the site, I noticed that my computer was running really slow and I started to get pop ups about different things on their site almost immediately. Now they are stuck there and I have to use techniques I learned from other classes to get those cookies or spam pop ups off of my computer. I have now received two emails from the website about their shoes and I did not even give them my email address.
Companies need to learn that these types of things are going to make customers annoyed, not intrigued to buy something. Customer service plays a huge part in how you conduct your business and I emailed the site about it yesterday and still have not heard anything back. In our book it talks about how customer service is one of the best weapons you can have against other companies, but if you are putting cookies to track purchases of your customers or getting their email or other information from their computer that is not ok. Those are not honest or even remotely appropriate ways to conduct a business. I have emailed them and let them know my opinions and am still waiting to hear back from them.
Know your customer, do not just think the more people you reach the better, it is also about the way you present yourself, your business, and your brand. Think about what the customer would like, not the way to reach mass media. Sometimes, that is the worst way to reach out to your consumers.

This week I am going to blog about a topic that is actually related to my Tweet. I quoted a site called http://www.webnox.com/viral_marketing/social_networking/ and they are talking about how buying an ad, such as a banner on a social networking/media site will be viewed my the masses. The only thing is, if most people are like me, I see that as spam. Facebook recently, now I am not sure if I have a virus on my computer or something and it is just me, but on my Facebook page, ad are in the news feed, when I click on a picture, and off to the side. They are also on every day sites like Peru for instance. On like one page a word is highlighted on the sign in page for the online library, and it looks like a link, but when you hover over it, it is an ad and if you click on it, it will direct you to that page that has NOTHING to do with PSC.

These are just some of the things that bother me and I do not know if it bothers other people. I do not want things popping up randomly on my Facebook, or even on the side panels. I feel that it is more a bother than an ad.

Like Evans talks about in our book, ask your customer how you can improve, ask them if they notice the ads or view them as spam? Ask them if they prefer your recent searches coming up on the sidebars on Facebook. See what you can do as a company to help your employees and see what they want out of you!

I have the perfect thing to actually rant about today on my blog that has a lot to do with the last few chapters we have been dealing with. Basically get to know your customers, see where they spend their time. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to get ads in my email and all over my Facebook about AARP and Seniorpeoplemeet.com. I am not even 25, I do not want your emails and your ads about meeting other elderly people or that I need to fill out stuff to be on Medicare. I do not need to know which nursing homes are in my area and what social events are going on for the elderly. That is great and all that they do all these things for our elders, but I do not need to receive emails on a daily basis asking if I want to meet elderly singles in my area. It is very frustrating, and even when I put it as junk, another random site for meeting elderly spouses finds its way into my email. It gets under my skin and these companies should do way more research and I bet you it would let them know that most of them do not even own computers or have Facebook for that matter. They need to do samples and see who is in the area and what age group they really need to target. I could see if I was in my 40’s that would be way more important, but as a 23 year old, that does not really concern me right now. Companies need to listen to their customers and do test to see where they spend most of their time, and I can guarantee you, it is not online.

One of the deals I got I got two days ago

http://www.groupon.com/goods?from_goods_nav=true

I received this one a this morning

http://www.groupon.com/lincoln/all

This is one I got a couple days ago, this is their general deals that go on daily.

This is what I mean by it becoming a little like spam. The deals are great to know about, but seeing them advertised on my email, Facebook, pop up ads, (does not happen very often, but sometimes) and if you click on one, numerous pop up on the page, it is a great idea, because it is hard to stop looking!

Today I am going to write about Groupon. I am a member of this site, and have purchased a few things from it in the past, but recently it has been bombarding my email and other social media. I have seen it all over Facebook and it has become more like spam than a site to purchase deals from. I feel sites like this do not need to OVER advertise it does to customers. We know you are there you do not have to remind us daily, or even numerous times a day. That is the type of stuff that gets on my nerves and I know it gets on others nerves as well. I will post some of the advertisement I see all over my email in a bit. Stay tuned.

I am actually writing about Body By Vi again this week. They recently just requested to be my friend on Facebook and they have almost 23,000 LIKES! I do not understand. What and how does this product work for other people but not for me. I have a friend who lost like 30 lbs on it! UNREAL! They just seem like a quick fix company and yet they are one of the leading companies for weight loss.

They are bombarding Facebook and other sites with their marketing and it is very annoying. Their Facebook page I believe to be unreal. There are so many people that swear and live by this product, and so many people who sell it that do not use it. I have noticed that only "skinny" people sell it who were already skinny before they started selling it. I do not understand how that works. If you wanted to endorse a product, wouldn't you want someone who has actually used it and lost weight with it to promote it. I just do not really buy into the hype, especially after trying it for 2 months and not losing a pound. I wonder how they went "viral" if it was a collector or a critic that got them their big break, good food for thought.

Each week I am going to follow a different company and see the different ways they utilize E-Marketing. There will be some companies I like, and some I am not fond of. The first one I chose is Body By Vi. They always have new employees of Facebook adding me and trying to get me to buy their product. I did and did not see any results. Now I want to follow them this week to see all of the annoying ways they market their customers.
The link to their page is as follows:

I want to know why it works for some people and not others. This is a perfect example of a company that bombards you with marketing ploys and it is very annoying.
