I hope Zack gets a walk today.

I love what you do. The dogs and cats in shelters need love and attention like all animals. You give them that human contact that shows them people do care. Hope many get adopted!

I enjoyed reading your blog. I have a love for animals and have always wanted to participate in animal rescue. It's very nice to see someone who cares as much as you seem to.

Each day this week I've promised Zack I would get to him and each day I've walked past him and he reminds me with a bellowing howl how it's got to be his turn this time. I was saving him for my last walk today and I was just getting ready to go get him......and then Mick happened. It was a little after 11:00 am when Augusta got a call from a client that she had found a little dog laying along the side of the road on Olive just east of Elm. Augusta asked if I would go and try to get him into a crate and back the shelter.

I found the client knelt down by a little scruff of gray black hair. He was no more than a foot off the roadway being shaded by some dried weeds. Tom and I had each walked dogs past this exact spot no more than a half hour prior to the client calling and I'm sure the dog was not there when we passed by. The dog was quiet, and unsure of his injuries, I checked for tenderness. We could see some dried blood on his sides and he yelped a little as I lifted him out of the weeds. I thanked the client for caring enough to stop and she told me she always stops for dogs at risk. Bless her.

I took the dog back to Augusta and she found what appeared to be puncture wounds on each side of the dog. Augusta had already made up her mind.....the dog was cute. So off to the Apricot Vet I go and the little guy finds himself in the hands of two more caregivers, the vet and the vet tech. They take their time with him and he remains quiet as they shave around his wounds and clean them out. I'm sure I noticed unspoken appreciation emanating from him as he leaned his head against the vet tech's neck. A closer look at the wounds indicates either another dog or perhaps a coyote got a hold of the little guy.

When I got back to the shelter with the dog and his meds Augusta asked Tom and I to name our new friend. Whenever Augusta asks us that question my mind immediately goes blank. Not wanting to name the dog Spot I deferred the decision to Tom. Augusta said it should be a German or English name and so Tom came up with the name Mick, for Mick Jagger. Mick is a Schnauzer mix approximately a year old. and is housed in pen I5. I would imagine he will have at least a 10 day quarantine, especially while he heals.

So that's the story of Mick, and why Zack didn't get his walk today. Tomorrow Zack, I promise.
