New topic! The House is introducing a bill that would severely penalize organizations with over 400,000 in payroll for not providing health benefits. Smaller businesses between the 400,000 and 250,000 payroll amount marks would have a smaller penalty and businesses under 250,000 would be exempt from penalty. Good idea, but I'm wondering if a possible side effect is an upsurgence of independent contractors, who are not eligible for in-house benefits.

Rochala, you have the right of it. I am seeing a lot of career professionals leaving their careers because of burn out. It is a growing problem. I shudder to think about the amount of training invested in a individual and they leave because they are being forced out due to high levels of stress. My goal is to help organizations heal this bleeding of their senior talent but it is difficult because the American work ethic doesn't have any sort of safety valve to prevent this issue. In several European countries it is understood that employees must take a holiday to destress and be with their family. What a wonderful idea. :)

You know what is fun about HR? Everything, but it is a business discipline that requires a lot of savvy and interpersonal expertise. How does one gain that? A book, no. Experience is always the primary indicator of a good HR. Any HR you work with in this day and age needs to have earned their chops out in the real world. An education is a fine thing but I'm seeing a lot of new employees fresh out of college and grad school who don't understand that it is necessary to understand your corporate socio-political environment. Anyone else seeing this?

Absolutely! In a government setting. Your insight into worker overload is of interest. I retired before I would have needed to because of just that - worker overload. 80% productivity (billable hours) and you have 20% of your time left to meet all of the other demands. I am a licensed clinical therapist and the caseload given to me was mostly teenagers and then the seriously chronically mentally ill. Why? Because I was a senior clinician. Never mind that doing psychotherapy is emotionally draining at best. It is a year since I left and I am still recovering. I burned out.

We are seeing an upsurgence of companies holding pat. It appears that most companies have or are doing a round of layoffs and doubling up the work of the employees who are left. I feel that we are going to hit a worker overload threshold that is going to affect the long term productivity. J.
