Heritage coins.

I have picked up a collection of heritage coins. What is this you may ask? The SA Mint commerarated a series of world heritage sites that are in South Africa. These are 1/4oz gold coins and started in 2002 and ended in 2009.

They consist of
2002 Robben Island

2003 Greater St Lucia wetlands
2004 Drakensburg
2005 Mapungubwe
2006 Cradle of mankind
2007 Cape Floral
2008 Vredefort Dome
2009 Richtersveld

very excited!!

What a start to the year!!! Mandela coins continue to do well in South Africa. In fact they are extremely difficult to source so supply and demand fundementals kick in. The key question is will they continue to soar in price? Time will tell.......

Compliments of the season to all. A new year and the gold coin frenzy continues. The SA Mint has not released the coins they will be launching. But we will know shortly. The 2007 Mandela De Klerk is now seeing very handsome returns. The set which was issued at ZAR9000 ($1285) now sells in excess of ZAR30000 ($4285). So if you have one of these sets well done!!!

Well its been a while since my last entry. World cup fever has now long passed. 2010 has been dedicated to world cup for South Africans. Special coin sets were introduced by the South African mont celebrating the event. In my opinion, the coin sets that are most desirable are the special launch sets where only 300 sets are minted. These sets have the mintmark on the coin. I am fortunate enough to be in possession of all three os the special launch sets. These being the 2006 Soccer City, 2009 Durban Stadium and the 2010 Cape Town Stadium. These were issued in 2010 and are already commanding a 20% premium to list price. Not bad!!!

So why do people invest in gold coins? Two reasons, they have a passion for it like a hobby and to make money out of it. To a collector coins represents history. It could represent a significant event in a country's history or could remind you of an earlier period of your life. In South Africa the SA Mint issued gold coins that depicted a theme and minted these in limited numbers. In 2004 The Nelson Mandela democracy coin was introduced. It is extremely difficult to find today at a reasonable price. Why? People love Madiba and will hold onto this as a memory of what he has dne for our country. This means supply is limited and demand very high. If you were lucky to purchase one in 2004 you would have made a 600% return. Phenomenal!!!!!

I am gobsmacked by the demand for Mandela coins. Most coins featuring our former president has done remarkably well. But if you think about it his legacy is legendary. Every South African wants a piece of him because he is our hero, our saviour. He will always be a part of South African history. Numismatic items is one way to remind us of that history and be proud of it. This may explain the enormous demand for Mandela coins and why these coins have appreciated in value over years.

To my knowledge the first to feature his image was the 1994/1995 Education FNB Nelson Mandela medallion minted by the SA Mint. These were produced in 5oz, 1oz gold, 1/10oz gold, a 5oz silver and bronze versions. These medallions are difficult to find. The 50z could set you back R200k while the 1oz R5o-R60k. I have seen the 1/10 version trading hands between R4-R5k. The 5oz silver between R8-R10k and the bronze around R1-R1.5k. Like the stock market demand and supply drive prices and these prices are only indicative of what I have experienced in 2010

Hi there. I would like to share interests and views about coin collecting particularly in South Africa. I purchased my first coin set from the SA Mint in 2007. At the time I was intrigued by the investment communities interest in gold coins. For me it was like an unknown investment world but as you learnt more about it I was amazed as to how popular it was. I had to be a part of it and certainly wanted to learn all about it. So what is coin investing all about? Can you make money out of it? Why do people collect coins? I hope to address these questions in the blogs to follow

What would you say?
