I am the mom of a dance competition kid and think it is very important to keep her in touch with reality so that she knows what to expect when it comes to winning, getting 7th place, 2nd place or just a silver medal.
I have chosen the career field I am in as you have to pay bills. The question is and will always be with moms like I is "Are you living out your dreams through your child?" and in my case I will have to say no. My mom did the same thing I do with my children, but it just seems to be on a lower scale as I had much more siblings. It is normal for a child to dream about being Miss America, a pop star, cheer leader, dancer, gymnast, the president, fireman, police officer, airline stewardice, pilot, athlete and the most popular kid in school.
My goal is to assist my children live out their dreams sensibly, assist them in not having to say: "could have, should have, would have" while encouraging academic excellence and a sense of knowing they will have the responsibility of maintaining themselves as adults.
This is definitely a work in progress.
