The rally consisted of chants, rally cries, and speeches given by community members and workers, including well-known "cafeteria lady", Betty White. A leader of the movement, LaVette McKill, stood atop a metal box as she gave a powerful speech. "Stay viligant about your struggle. Nothing is gained without struggle!" A group of about 100 people gathered roadside along US1 on April 4, in hopes of eliminating poverty jobs at the University of Miami. The protesters included students, workers, and faculty members, all aspiring to bring light to an unjust situation. This was far from a coincidence, the protest took place exactly 45 years after Martin Luther King was killed in Memphis, Tennessee, while fighting for equality.

After reading numerous news stories about Manti Te'o, I have come to the understanding that the media plays a huge influence on society's opinion. This story incorporates many elements of news including: timeliness, impact, proximity, and conflict. This story had an impact on Notre Dame's reputation as a school and as a football program. Many students were affected by the story because they were led to believe that Manti Te'o's girlfriend was a real human, and also because now Notre Dame's authenticity is being questioned. This story also includes proximity for me personally, because I am from the same island as Manti. The story also affects America as a nation, because it highlights the dangers of the internet. Prominence is an important element of news in regards to this story because Manti Te'o went from being viewed as a hero to being viewed as a liar overnight. Many people looked up to Te'o because of his idealistic personality traits, however now that they are being viewed as a lie, his credibility has been lost. The major conflict in this news story is the questioning of if Te'o was involved in the alleged "hoax" or not. Because his girlfriend did not exist, many were led to believe that he made her up for publicity purposes.
