Natasha

I just read a blog that disputed the label of disease an addiction. Give your opinions and then I will follow up with mine.

Hello everyone. =) disease and addiction. Well addiction can be mental and physical as well; the same stance as a disease. A disease is illness, sickness, toxicity or unfavorable environmental factors; any abnormal condition. In a sense, yes a addiction and disease go hand and hand because normally, if you have an addiction, it's spawned from some kind poison that is put into your body, cocaine, meth or any drug or anything that's not suppose to be in there. What makes an addiction a disease is the aftermath; that's the big part. Some people believe that drug addiction or alcohol addiction can be passed down from one generation to the next...kind of like a disease. So in a sense, the two are linked. May it be what your doing to your insides or what your doing to your family tree, addiction becomes a disease.

The blog I read stated that it is a behavior problem and not a disease. That labeling it as a disease only serves to relieve the guilt of the addict. I disagree. It is both a behavior problem and a disease. It was stated that a disease has symptoms and causes. Well, addiction has both of those. Long before an addict touches the first drink or drug they exhibit addictive behaviors and thinking patterns. A lot of addicts have genetic history, like you said LA. Addicts also tend to have past trauma's and/or disorders. I think that adds up to causation. Labeling it a disease does not illeviate the addicts guilt. That is why there are 12 step programs and rehabs. To help the addict forgive themselves and move beyond their past mistakes.

Addiction of anything is bad. May it be Love even. But that certainly doesn't mean its a disease. Addiction doesn't contaminate the environment. Neither its any trauma.

I am not sure I understand. I don't believe that disease contaminates the environment. Please explain more.

This is a cause -effect relationship where addiction is a cause & disease the effect.
