Ancient Chinese customs

dennis hodgson on Chinese Culture, Hong Kong

Those of you who are familiar with my blog will know that I live in Hong Kong, and my last post of 2012 is a discussion of the ancient Chinese custom of painting "door gods" on the main entrances of buildings to prevent the entry of evil spirits. The models for these guards were two Tang Dynasty generals, and I've included three examples from public buildings [two ancestral halls and a temple] close to my house in order to compare how these are portrayed.

Cool characters, I think I like the bottom two best.

Glad you like them, but the two you singled out are examples of the cheaply printed modern version of the door gods. Personally, I like the ones on the doors of the Hau Ku Shek Ancestral Hall.
