Why did David Thoreau made the walden pond? What purpose?

Henry David Thoreau lived on the shores of Walden pond (in Concord Massachusetts) for two years of his life and he wrote a book about his experiences. Had he the technology in 1845, I am sure he would have made a blog. :)
