Changing from WordPress.com to WordPress.org

TheSparklingBlogette on Help, Wordpress, Html, Css

Hello,
I am a blogger on WordPress.com but lately I feel kind off pinched by the limited option you have on there. When I started looking around I discovered there is also WordPress.org where you can start your own and totally self hosted blog.
So I started looking around on the interwebs but then I got a little scared. What are the prices? I know I can import my entire blog but what if there are problems and I loose everything?
But the biggest problem: How does it work, do you need to know a lot about html or css, what is a host, etc..

I hope someone can help me with this or maybe will help me through the entire process and even further.
Calling a professional isn't really an option because I am only 14 years old and my parent's know as much about the internet a a stone..

Thanks already!

To answer your first question: Hosting is only going to cost about $120-150 a year. A domain name another $9-20 a year. Find a hosting company with a guaranteed 99.9% up-time.

Do not use Go-Daddy.

To answer your second question: download your blog then upload it into your new site. If you experience any problems you still have the copy on your computer. If Wordpress, com even allows you to download a copy.

To answer your third question: knowing HTML and CSS definitely helps but it's not required. And there's a lot of places to help you through it. My forum being one of them.

You'll need to get a host, a domain, create or upload a site/theme/style, a database, upload your blog, reorganize it, activate it.

Oops! And you'll need to download the latest version of Wordpress. And any plugins you require.

It's really not as complicated as it may seem. Nor is it very expensive ( less than 50 cents a day - for hosting and a domain for a year ).

1. get a host
2. buy a domain
3. download the latest version of Wordpress
4. download any relevant plugins
5. activate a website
6. create a database
7. upload Wordpress
8. activate Wordpress
9. install plugins into the plugin folder
10. find a relevant Wordpress theme
11. download theme
12. upload theme into the theme/style folder
13. produce quality, original, content
14. promote your site...don't spam

What host would you recommend?

TheTAZZone ∙ 2 May, 12

Pretty much anything but GoDaddy.

You can check out Bravenetand HostGator .

Recently my friend got hold with Godaddy hosting as they are bad and worst hosting provider !
Believe me I don't want the other to get into the trouble so suggest you to try any other but never from godaddy hosting !

Bluehost is also nice for shared plan

I am also on word press, I am scared of org, don't know anything about it!

Why are you scared of WordPress.org? It is merely the site used to host the software you need to self-host WordPress plus a whole mess of themes, widgets, plug-ins and whatever. It is a resource site, and well worth the time to look around.

I would like to suggest you Hostgator at the top, GoDaddy as second option and BlueHost as third for your blog hosting. Shared plans on bad hosts suck and may kill your blog. Dedicated hosts cost high but above mentioned hosts can give you better services on shared hosting also. If you are interested in moving your blog to your own hosting with WordPress.org, I can help you. Add me on Skype. Username: supportivehands
