It depends on what you want.
I agree that when it comes to the number of visits, avertising might be the most important thing. But I think most of those people only have a short look at your blog and that's it.
For me, content is still the most important. If you didn't have anything worth saying and focus only on marketing, then why would you even blog?
I don't have thousands of visits a day, not even hundreds, but the people that visit my blog seem to like it and come back and often leave great comments and that is the best I can get.

I am not saying you DONT need quality content. Yes quality is really important, but in my opinion advertising should be priority number 1 and quality content is only number 2. It is just like business, your service is not the best but you have many customers because you advertise a lot. :-)

You are totally wrong... I have question to you ...If you dont have a good traffic any one give you ads..or adsense...
quality content is more important.....visitors are not coming to your blog for visiting your ads and support it...They need quality contents then only they come again...

Just got to say that content is King regardless to what you do. Yes, you have to work hard to promote your blog but even if a million people visit it, they will not return if you are selling rubbish, so to speak.. Just take a look at those cheap shops for example. Use a product once and it breaks, will you buy from the shop again?

I so despise the expression content is king for this reason.
Content= stuff
king= of paramount importance
stuff is important? basically you should put good stuff on your blog?
Why do people keep repeating it like a mantra all across the web "stuff is important" next thing you will start shuffling around saying "braaaaains!"
You should put good stuff on your blog is such a generic non statement, if you find yourself saying it or even worse typing it you need to worry that your mind has left the building.

Forget duplicate contents. It would lead you nowhere on the long run. Have you read about the recent EMD update and how Google intent to hurt low quality websites and sites using aggressive promotional methods? I think you should do a rethink. :)

It makes sense. It's all about promoting yourself.
I have been blogging for about a year and never really pushed to advertise myself only because I'm new and still learning. I just share my content with friends and family for now. People tell me I should check out this person or that person to get ideas on how to get more traffic but I wasn't really interested because I didn't want to push it until I was confident in what I was doing
I say each to their own. It's hard to find good quality blogs if they aren't promoting themselves either

content will have to be of some level of goodness such as good grammer and spelling as I'm sure no one really wants to read a blog post full of mistakes and has no understanding too it...
as part from that I find over writing (like doing a big essay post) is a bit too much as it may be good but one look at it and your like =_=" too much reading and leaving! you have figure a way to attract a reader to stay ...
so really good content is a must but to a certain limit ...

I have to disagree with your comment about "over writing". It implies that all visitors to blogs are looking for the same thing. On my blog, not all the posts are long, but if I'm discussing a serious subject, it isn't possible to say anything worthwhile in 100-200 words. The most popular post on my blog is also one of the longest. However, readers with a short attention span can listen to exotic bird calls or the nightly frog chorus in springtime, which I recorded myself, and there is also a lot of original photography of a part of the world that most people have never visited (Hong Kong). The secret is to mix it up rather than put a blanket ban on "long essays".

I don't agree with your title, especially not in the beauty and fashion blogging community. Doing reviews, proper outfit ideas etc. one needs to have good content AND photos! One can see when a blogger have not put in the proper time to do a post, and generally that would put me off, and most likely won't return to your blog. I guess it all depends who your target audience is.

I know within reading the first 3 sentences whether the blog is interesting enough to finish reading or not. If ot, I'm gone. Content is key. It's THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF BLOGGING. If you have quality content, your readers will do the advertising for you. I never worry about my stats. My rule is: Focus on the writing.
When you focus on your message, it will do it's own work. That's honestly how my own blog has done so well. I stick by this rule. :)
(And, I have figured out how to advertise the right way. Sometimes, you have to put some $ into your work to guarantee good advertising.)

It all depends on what you think the purpose of a blog is. I have NO advertising on my blog, because I don't blog to make money. I blog to entertain and to stimulate discussion. My priority is to give visitors something that they will enjoy reading, that will make them think.
If I want to make money, there are far better ways than blogging.

I wasn't implying that you should be making money through blogging. I was, however, stating that if you want to get your message out there, you should consider putting your money into ADVERTISING YOUR BLOGGING.
But: No one wants to read a crappy blog. Which is why it's important to have quality blog content. You want your readers to keep coming back.

Contents makes your reader visit your blog countless times, however without marketing it or sharing it..It will be left unattended..As they say, it takes two to tango..:P
