Did you know that books can breathe?

Vinu Nair says 594 days ago

People visiting the British Museum complained of getting headaches. This was because books seem to absorb or "breathe" in air and "breathe" out smells of their own. There was so many old books in the Museum that there was no fresh air left which meant people got headaches from breathing in bad air !!

This is one of those old wives' tales. Paper is an organic product that is breathable and permeable. It also breaks down with time from interaction with air (oxygen). That's why many old books start to smell "musty." The myth was that the profane books of the museum were giving off poisonous odors and had to be treated with some kind of cedar. The cedar helps b/c paper, being a breathable and permeable organic substance, absorbs odors.
