Facebook Fan Pages?

Jdigg on Blogs, Blogging, Networking, Facebook, Social, Pages

Hello. I'm kind of new to the Bloggers community and, although not new to blogging, I'm definitely fresh to the world of really interacting with other bloggers and actually getting traffic to the things that I'm doing online that don't just come from one or two people close to me.

I was asked in a comment recently though if I had a Facebook fan page set up for readers to "like" or connect to. I had always just linked readers to all of my own personal social networking pages, but would setting up particular accounts specifically for my blogging purposes be a better idea? I kind of worried that doing something like that might make me seem a little self-important or egotistical since I'm not really anyone all that special, but I also want to provide something for people that are reading to be able to connect to without having to go through all of my personal pages.

Is this something that most of you more established bloggers have done? Is it a necessity? I'm interested in getting some feedback on this topic...

Hello Jdigg,

First, welcome to Bloggers! :)

Second, that would depend on your strategy and your end-game (or goal?). If your end-game is to generate a mass audience, become famous or make a lot of money, then the answer is "Yes". You need to create a Facebook Fan Page, a dedicated Twitter account, a Google+ Page and a LinkedIn Group (If that's where your target audience is at).

Third, fan pages or fan accounts are generally used to stream media directly to where people usually hangout. E.g. I love tutsplus.com. But I don't usually have time to always keep visiting the site especially on some articles that don't interest me. So I like their Facebook Fan Page and follow their Twitter account to only see articles that I want to see after that. If its interesting, I go visit. If its not, I don't visit.

Lastly, when it comes to making these pages, its usually another hub for status updates. E.g. If your site is down or in-the-making of a new product/service, wouldn't some audience love to know about it? The anticipation, the feeling of something great is coming can get them to feel loyal towards you and your blog/brand.

Well, I feel like I just wrote an entire book about Internet Marketing: Fan Edition. Sorry for the long post, here's a potato: http://img.alibaba.com/photo/50398050/Potato.jpg

Why a potato? Give Apple to eat and re-read your answer rather squishing the potato!

LOL

Haha thanks for the random potato, Abdul. As well as for all of the very informative feedback, I really appreciate it.

I don't exactly know that my goal or end-game in my blogging is to build a massive readership, become famous, or make a lot of money. But nearly every other aspect of putting together a page does appeal to me. It would be nice for readers who spend a great deal of time on Facebook or Twitter (or any other social network for that matter) to know when a new post that might interest them hits the site without having to visit every day just to check. It'd also be helpful for those moments in which Blogger is down or not cooperating for folks to know when they can expect my blog to come back up.

I guess more than anything I'm just really worried that creating something like this will make me look as though I feel more important than I actually am. I don't want to be "that guy" who starts his own fan club, you know what I mean? Especially since I'm not particularly building a brand or product of any kind so much as just writing and documenting things as they happen.

I've started a Facebook page for the blog but have kept it "unpublished" thus far until I feel okay with it. We'll see how it goes, I guess!

Thanks again for your thoughtful reply. :)
