Gathering Research for 'Skin Whitening' Post

The Urban Xenophile on Beauty, Blogging, Beauty Research, Beauty Article, Anthropology, Blogger Opinion

Hey all! I've decided to do an article on skin whitening products, and the act of skin whitening amidst different cultures around the world. If you use skin whitening products or have thoughts on why they are used, I would love your feedback.

I will credit any and all comments received in my article on my blog (http://instylexenophile.com), unless you wish to be anonymous. As an anthropologist, I am fascinated by this particular beauty regiment, and as a woman of colour, I am slightly concerned. If you are not comfortable posting on a forum, please feel free to DM me or email me at jordanamanchester@gmail.com

Thanks! oxo

being chinese, i find that white skin is preferred in my culture. but this also goes for all asian cultures as a whole. many of the older generations looked down on their own kind who had darker skin color. i think it had to do with class and status. if you had lighter fair skin, it meant that you were beautiful and well off. usually if you had darker skin, it meant that you were from the country side, a farmer, and poor.

i remember going to japan before with my ex-bf, and i was tanned. his grandmother disapproved of me because i had darker skin, but then she lifted up my skirt and saw that my upper thighs were light and she approved of me. basically i was judged on my skin color. kind of weird huh?

almost all of the products in asia have some sort of skin whitening added to it. thats one thing that i hated about shopping in japan/china. but these days, much of this is changing. a lot of the younger generations do like having tans because it looks sexy and is trendy depending on the style that you are trying to emulate. however, i think that white skin is still preferred among asians.

hope some of this helps.

Is the importance of white skin something that your parents have taught you? Or are you just going off of what society is telling you?

The incident with the grandmother is interesting. Do you think that anytime in the future the trend will be more towards dark skin?

Thanks for replying by the way, the information is fabulous :)
