Seems like you have solved your problem. By the way, if you ever need to play with the colors (or anything) again, you can download WP Instant to your desktop, and try customizing your theme without affecting your live site.
When you are satisfied, then you can simply apply that to your live site ( helps you from breaking something!)
Your new header looks nice but I wasn't impressed with the comment background.
WP Instant is free and you can download plugins and themes and play with them.

The theme seems alright now and so does the comments section.
I think you are not satisfied with the theme. You can change the theme to some other SEO friendly free theme.
