How do you manage blog comments???

Andregs on Help, Comments, Advice

I love both getting comments and leaving comments on other blogs, especially when I enjoyed the post. But I would like to know what you think about these questions...

1. Do you answer all comments on your blog? I feel like it's not a place for starting a conversation, even if sometimes I would like to, and don't want to stalk my readers, haha.

2. When you leave a comment on someone else's blog, is there any way you can get notified if they answer?? I heard about Disqus, and ofc by subscribing...but what other ways are there?¿

THANKS!

1. For the first question. I respond to a comment if he/she is asking about the post and my comment box is moderated if someone will just post their link .

2. It should always have an option, either to be notified or not. Yeah, Disqus is great. I've been using it for quite some time. You can earn to it by promotion. Good moderation settings and sleek design.

If the comment on your blog needs to be answered, i.e. the commenter has asked something, then you should answer, otherwise not necessary. Still if you can manage to respond all comments, it is good.

If you are commenting on anyone else' blog, then it depends on the configuration of the comment section on that blog either the administrator has left option for commenter to subscribe for replies or not. Commonly, a "box" has to be checked below the comment box for subscription for updates.

I usually answer, if they are asking something on my blog. Otherwise I don't (or I just thank people, when I have the time).

I'd love it if blogger could tell you when someone replied to your comment on other blogs!

1. I answer all comments on my blog that's because I don't get a lot of comments to respond to. However, that would depend on what they comment on. If its something debatable, a question, suggestion, correction, or anything that can entice a conversation or leading that reader to become a loyal one, I will respond. If not, I'd leave it be or just say thanks for reading or something.

2. Considering that a lot of bloggers are using different platforms/widgets or extensions to receive their comment notification, I would be subscribing to each of them if possible and not all of them. E.g. Wordpress require me to have an account on Wordpress. So all Wordpress Blogs are under that account where I can monitor blog updates and my comment activity there. Disqus is awesome. IntenseDebate is another good widget to use. The point about these widgets is so that the reader would find it easy to comment (like auto-login with your Facebook account to comment on a Disqus widget). Course, to each blogger his/her own.

1. Do you answer all comments on your blog.
Every single one! Even those silly ones that just comments and asks me to follow them for a follow, I merely say thank you, of course I don't do it because I don't run my blog that way. But I appreciate people taking the time to comment, and I do the same to people I follow. Even if I just say lovely post or something.

2. When you leave a comment on someone else's blog, is there any way you can get notified if they answer??
Sometimes there is a box you can tick that will let you know once the blogger have responded, atlernatively check back or ask the blogger if they'll mind tweeting or emailin you with an answer?

I try & respond to every comment I get. I don't care if people leave a web address link in the comment box, just as long as they at least pretend to be interested in the post and have written something relevant.

1. I do try to respond to all the comments on my blog, I feel its just courteous.

2. Disqus and CommentLuv are the two best comment pluggins, according to most. I personally went with Disqus, and honestly it drives traffic somehow, because its so widely used, I think. CommentLuv is definitely interesting, though I have not tried it myself. I like Disqus because you can turn off the email notifications, and you can still go to the dashboard (or even a comment section that has disqus) and it will notify you if anyone has responded to any blog you commented on that has disqus. I think its the most well rounded and useful comment plugin, though I'm jealous of CommentLuv because every time you comment it displays your latest post....

1. I reply to all comments. It's the right thing to do and I like communicating with people who take the time to read my blog and comment. When I have time I make sure to read other blogs and comment too. It's great networking and there are some good reads out there.

2. Most commenting platforms have an option to be notified of replies or decline them from what I have seen.

I don't receive many comment, so I usually just answer back to them all. I think it's polite when I have the time to.

Andregs ∙ 23 weeks ago

Thanks for all the answers! About the first, the general opinion is that t's fine to answer all comments, so I will continue doing so, since I would feel bad if I didn't, and don't get that many :)

About the second...I might try Disqus soon, after all your opinions...!

Thanks again!

If you have any questions or concerns with it, I'll help if I can if you want to send me a message. I've used it for a bit now, and even though I still have SOME issues, I've learned what to expect with it.

I respond to all comments that are left on my blog, maybe not instantly due to the my busy schedule but asap, I have had a few bloggers who continue to reply trying to have a massive convo on my comment boxes before and when I think enough is enough I would reply to their comment and stop after that.

As for you commenting... when we comment normally under the comment box there should be a tick box saying to subscribe to response, that is the only way I know unless you return to check on it every now and again.

Yes, that's also a good point. I don't want the comment box to turn into irrelevant, too long conversations.

I will check for the box, I'm newbie to blogs so am not familiar with all the tools yet! Thanks for commenting!

Shanay ∙ 23 weeks ago

If my readers ask me a question I try to comment right back. I don't think your a stalker when you comment back, it just shows that your interested in your readers.

On some blogs they have it where you can get notification. The only thing not all blogs have them.

When I started blogging, I replied to comments only to answer direct questions, but I now reply to all comments. One thing I will never do is use any type of captcha. I have enough trouble filling in captchas when I comment on other blogs, and I think that anyone with a visual impairment must find them almost impossible.

I do use comment moderation, and since receiving a torrent of abuse over a post criticizing Hong Kong politicians, I no longer allow anonymous comments.

Andregs ∙ 23 weeks ago

Yes, totally agree! Captchas are really annoying. I think I had them for a brief period, but I don't really think they're that useful, except for making readers avoid leaving comments...

If the comment received is a question or talking point, then I'll usually leave a reply. If it is a general opinion, then not so much.

I have my site setup so that any first time commenter must be manually approved to prevent comment abuse from spammer-bots. As far as criticism from people, as long as it isn't deemed as very offensive to other readers debate is encouraged.

Andregs ∙ 23 weeks ago

I'm lucky to have never gotten any experience with spammers...! Thanks for posting!
