Is free always better and can it ever be worse than not getting anything at?

I don't like to buy anything unless I need it. As for free stuff, I don't want it unless I need it, someone I know might want it, or if it has some resale value. When I was in college, I would take almost anything that was free. But now that I am earning my own money, I realized that I don't need to clutter my home with useless free stuff unless I need it.

Free stuff becomes valuable if the item is needed and necessary and you can't afford to pay for it yourself. But, if it has no use to you, you might enjoy the fact that you got it for free for a short while, but not for long.
Sometimes a free gift may have a vast amount of value or become very meaningful because it came from a special person in your life, or a loved one who is no longer here.
