"It's all President Bush's fault" is something that the Dems say when evaluating the economic downturns our great country has been facing.
But is it true? Largely the answer is a resounding yes and here's how.
From a psychological point of view, most people believed that when we got a new President, it somehow signified an ability to wave the magic wand and either do one or a combination of four things in the blink of an eye.
Stop the bleeding
Reverse the bleeding and replenish
Cauterize the wounds
Heal the wounds in way that doesn't leave an ugly scar
Not only was the President unable to do any of the above "in the blink of an eye", it just so happens that no human alive could have done it either. It was an unrealistic expectation based on the fact that the damage done by the Bush and more aptly at times "Cheney administration" had yet to reach a crescendo. It's the equivalent of trying to stop an epic proportion landslide. The only thing that we can do is watch, try to implement safeguards to minimize, evacuate, brace ourselves as best we can and offer a meaningful response. Which depending on the magnitude of the event, may be hampered at times despite the best humanly possible efforts.
In looking at those options in dealing with the disasters, the "evacuate" part was done well. Americans "evacuated" from the GOP because they understood who and what party's policies got us in this mess in the first place. Many of us were so euphoric from the fact that it was a great moment for the history of America in the election of the first Black President, that the change “in the good old boy standard" euphoria would transcended into a change the way we turn our TV's on and off. Just like that! . Life rarely works that way. There was potential for elements of that kind of relief to be true but in this case, any chances were blocked by the obstructionist GOP. A party who was so bitter, they actually banded together to block the Olympics and prayed for the failure of our President. Which if would have been successful, meant thousands of jobs and millions of dollars and stimulus to our economy. Chicago and America would have benefited beyond measure.
But by GOP standards, it's not what's best for America. It's what's best for "how they feel" at any given time. And if they "feel like" doing something that may eventually hurt most Americans then so be it. Not because I say so, but because they did it with the Olympics and it's a continuation of what their leader President Bush did during his tenure. This ugly behavior was not a new phenomenon. And most Americans, even some in the GOP hold their heads down in shame when admitting as much.
So when you have what was the biggest bank failure in US history during Bush's watch in WamU, the Juggernaut AIG failure under the Bush watch, the Lehman Brothers failure under the Bush watch, mix in the loose regulations that allowed the banks to be completely out of control, sprinkle in bad policies that hurt the middle class, slow growth, and no confidence. You have a situation that is equal to the great depression for many Americans and the worst recession America as a whole has ever seen.
And I did mention the unpaid Bush wars?
All dropped at the feet of this President. And again, had not even reached it's full potential of damage when he took office.
So no, President Obama couldn't twinkle his nose like a genie and close all of the wounds, stop the bleeding etc. in less than four years. But he has done admirably well despite the GOP obstructionism.
It's why we must allow President Obama to continue to improve our condition as a nation. And not a nation like the Bush's created and Romney wants to continue. A time of the best things for the ultra wealthy and sloppy seconds for the rest of us. Which like their Olympics position, is not the American way. Just the GOP one.
