Is there such a thing, as too many posts?

Sue McKay on Blogging

Being new to the blogging world, and having a lot of content that I believe is worthy of blogging, is there such a thing as TOO MANY posts in one day, or week?

I think there is, no matter how interesting the stuff you write is, most people aren't going to want to read it continuously. It depends what works best for you but I would say no more than one post a day.

I think Zotwot has a point. If you are doing several posts a day as an example, people will either have to come back to your blog several times a day (and that's if they have time on their hands) to keep up with what you are doing, or if someone only visits twice a week, they will obviously miss out on many posts.

Saying all that, it is your blog and a matter for you. If you have loads of readers, maybe it will work.

Sue, I've been blogging since 11/12/12. I have published less than 60 blog posts, but I attracted over 3,500 email subscribers in two months. The quality of the posts is more important than the quantity of the posts. If I have 3,500 email subscribers, that would be 3,500 emails to every one blog post. If I published 5 posts a day, 3,500 people will have to worry about 5 different blog posts a day. Just think - almost 20,000 emails!

My reputation is at least 999 words on average per post. So, that is extremely overwhelming for them. I generally start writing my post right after 5 PM, and officially publish the written article right before midnight. So, I give plenty of time in between my posts. I never published every day until January. I noticed a few followers are backing away from the daily publications. I plan to publish before midnight because I am located near NY in EST. So, California is three hours before my time while China is 12 hours ahead. Therefore, it's a marketable time.

This is something I wonder about constantly, as I'm just about to crest 150 posts. I slowed down recently to 4 posts a week, but with a growing pack of older posts that never get read again, I wonder again if I'm still posting too much.

Fact is, I have a post scheduled next week, I think, about what I'm dubbing Spring Cleaning. Some of my older posts just aren't as good as I'd like. So someday in the near future, I plan on going back and culling some posts.

Having said that, I do have a 'promotion' routine I go through every week, and one aspect of that is promoting an older post that deserves to be seen by my current audience.

More than a post a day can be overwhelming for readers unless you're posting only a quote or picture.

If you have a really good idea for a post draft it out then wait to post it, or schedule it for a day when you don't think you'll be able to post.

If you're looking for more readers for some of your older posts link to them in your current posts, but only if they're relevant.

From a readers perspective, I don't appreciate multiple posts in any one day. It clogs up my feed of other blogs.
I'd say quality over quantity. I post 4 times a week.

I think as long as you're coming out with great content, the schedule of posts doesn't matter. For example I come out with them fairly quickly when a blog is new but slow down to about one or two a week later on.

I like giving my readers a lot of stuff to read so I at least try to get to like 10 or 15 post number, but later on rushing things might affect quality of posts. So it's sometimes better to slow down and really think about what you're going to come out with

well i think it all depends on what kind of blog your running..in my case i sometimes post 3 or 4 posts a day..but my blog is a news blog in spanish..and there is alot of news in the world to cover...so yea..it all depends i guess..cheers!

Sue McKay ∙ 20 weeks ago

True, I agree with that. It is dependent on the type of blog.

What is striking to m from among all the blogs that I have read and bookmarked is the quality that I got from them.......every time I found a new blogger with great contents, I always see to it that I am waiting for his/her new post/s.....learning from somebody is always a positive experience for me......
