This may sounds cliche, but communication. And not expecting to get everything you want out of life from them. The person you're with can only give you so much, and you need to be sure that what they can give you is enough. You aren't going to be around each other 24/7, as much as you try to make it that way.

Yes, Cummuncation is the key just like trust. If you don't have that then you can't go forward.
