In Maltese you say " Baħar " .....the (ħ) also H must be pronounced very heavy !!
Neilyamit very interesting what you said. I Know that Fillipino language has too many dialects. So "DAGAT" us my friend EGeeKBee wrote and "KARAGATAN" as you wrote, are Tagalo?
Filipino refers to the national language. It has a lot of components from regional dialects...majority from the Tagalog dialect.
Dagat is used in almost all Filipino regional dialects.
"Dagat" refers to sea (general term).
"Karagatan" refers to Sea (specific name).
Well as for the dialects... I think "dagat" goes for all dialects and the the national language as well. I speak visayan and they call it 'dagat' also
Mare Nostrum. Yes you are right. But I've met in Latin Dictionary also the word SAL. From the same route we have the word SALT. You can see the same thing happened in greek language too. ΑΛΣ (ancient Greek = Sea) From the same word we have the words ΑΛΑΤΙ (salt), ΑΛΙΕΥΣ (fisherman) and so on...

Im from Malaysia, my National Language is Malay. So the word 'sea' in Malay is LAUT.
海 in Chinese, although it has different pronunciations in different parts of China; for example, "hui" in Cantonese, "hai" in Shanghainese (Shanghai literally means "upper (or higher) sea".
