having confidence in one's self abilities or worth. Ex: women who stay in negative relationships because they don't think they can get another one.

If we look around, how can anyone see past the strife of this world? Media outlets consume the minds of the public with "negativity." What's the first word taught when we were young? "No."
Quite frankly, it's an uphill battle for those walking this earth to think highly of themselves or completely buy into his or her ability to be good at something.

One possibility could be that the girl/guy were not given proper boundaries when they were growing up. Not giving children boundaries, ownership, responsibilities and a good sense of what it is they need could prove to be detrimental for them when their thrust into adulthood.

It definitely has to do with a lack of confidence but I think it's the fear of being alone that promotes the idea of settling. The fear of never finding anyone better and they'd rather be with someone who treats them poorly than be alone. It's a sad thing.
