I don't know if I'd want to share any big "secrets" on here, but I actually don't have any haha. One thing is to remember you're writing for the internet and short attention spans so if you're writing a huge post, make sure to break it down with headings and photos.
I always wanted to be a blogger, for about 9 years even before blogging became easier with wordpress and blogger, etc. I didn't crack down and start doing it until a year ago though. Was an article writer for 5, but it wasn't really blog style.
I'm not a success traffic wise, so far. But I feel like those that see my blog, appreciate it enough. And that's a true bloggers success in my opinion.

Quality posts, write as well as you possibly can, on subjects that matter to you and that you are passionate about.
Challenge yourself. Its a tough thing to really do, but its worth it, because you will better yourself and your writing
Word Limits. Set some, you don't have to listen to what other people do, but know that people have short attention spans, and want something they can read quickly, unless they are REALLY into it. I try to keep my articles to around 500 words, and the short stories to around 1000 words (yet I sometimes go to 1500), and poetry to less than 15 stanzas, or 60 lines.
All in all, I go back to the first one, write well. That's the biggest known secret of all.

You should use "read more" links on long posts... that way if you have ads the reader has to see two set per post.

I write A LOT on my blogs (I blame my english grad status) so I use a lot of "read mores" and headings particularly to break down the post, and catchy titles. I limit myself to one photo per post cos lots of imagery is just clutter and slows everything down.
