what do you view as a Quality Blog Comment?

Josie Bisett on Comment, Blog, Quality, Follow

I'm wondering what everyone else views as a 'Quality' Blog Comment? I like to see a bit more than just a one liner response...

Don't get me wrong - it's nice to get ANY comment at all:) But I'd really like to know a bit more about you through your comment!

Tell me how you really feel - what you really liked about what you've just read - and if me or my blog relates to you or something in your blog, I REALLY want to know!

Your comment is not just a good opportunity to recruit me as a potential follower - but it's your window of opportunity for others that see it too.

I love reading other people's comments - on other peoples blogs also - but it takes a little more than just 'nice blog... please follow me' to entice me to follow the link - after all there are SO many cool blogs on here... I just don't have the time to follow everyone!

So please leave a Quality comment - I can't wait to find out more about y'all, and find me some fabulous fresh bloggers to follow!!!

I totally agree!
It makes me happy when commenters say something that opens up a dialogue, or when they ask questions. I like to reply to all of the comments on my blog, so I like when something is said that I can easily respond to ^^

Thanks for commenting Pearl! I'm glad you agree - I was starting to think I was on my own, with my aspirations for 'quality' comments!

I think it's good 'blog' etiquette to reply to our comments also; however, I guess that could get impractical for the most popular bloggers out there!

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules for commenting, apart from the obvious one that a brief "nice blog..." followed by a hotlink to the commenters blog is insulting.

Other than that, I see nothing wrong with one-liners, as long as they are good one-liners. I have a regular visitor to my blog who only ever leaves such short comments, and I think they enhance the post commented on.

Personally, I rarely comment on a post if all I can say is that I like it or agree with it. If I post a comment, it's usually along the lines of "have you considered this [aspect of the subject]?" In other words, I like to move the debate forward.

I only ever post a link back to my blog if I have a post that discusses the same subject, and then not before I have posted a summary of my ideas on that subject.

Hi Dennis -

Thank you for your comment - you definitely moved the debate forward, and I'm really glad you mentioned that one-liners can enhance a post.

I stand somewhat corrected. My one-liner comment was directly in reference to the"nice blog... follow me back" comments - I didn't intend to generalize.

However, I'm still interested in more about who you (i.e my commenter) is. Luckily within this community I can click your name and find out that 'wow - this guy studied Geology like I did... etc'.

Probably not everyone is as nosy as me though ;)

dennis hodgson ∙ 31 May, 12

You studied geology too Josie? I abandoned the subject in 1971 to work in Outward Bound, but I was able to use my science background to get into book editing 20 years later.

Josie Bisett ∙ 31 May, 12

Dennis, Yes - but I'm really more of a Geophysicist though. I did physics and math with a bit of geology thrown in. I'm not sure if I've abandoned the subject or not yet.... I've been a stay at home Mom for the past 3 years and this is so much more my passion!

I love comments! :) Well, as long as these comments are not posted obviously just to attract traffic in their blog, like asking something that you had been mentioning all throughout your post. For example, I posted a guide on driver's license renewal and included the branch where I renewed mine (plus specific instructions on how to get there), and someone commented "Which branch is this?" and included her blog URL in the end. It completely ruined my day and I deleted the comment instantly. From then on, I made a custom message on my comment box telling readers to read before posting comments, otherwise the comments will be ignored and deleted.

I want to keep my blog as interactive as possible and I'd love to share what I know to everyone but comments like that are below the belt for someone who has put time and effort into creating a quality blog post.

Josie, it's only now that I realized that you were the same person that started this "talks" (now I feel a bit conscious if you consider the comment I left at your "A Darwinian Love Affair" post a quality comment or not. If I may add, I just love your story so much because I could really somewhat relate to it because I met my special someone while trying to conquer the Philippines' highest mountain. Only one thing though, the marriage thing hasn't happened yet. Hopefully, in time, I could post something that would tell we ended up in marriage, too. Have a nice day, still can't get over with your beautiful love story.:)

Haha! Pinay!
You left the BEST comment I've ever received actually on my blog! There was no doubting you had genuinely read AND enjoyed the story. Thanks so much for participating in this talk - and for making such 'quality' comments I might add :)

Derek ∙ 1 Jun, 12

For me, the person first has to use there real name in the usefield box and not a keyword or keyword phrase. If they don't do this, i'll not approve th comment even if it's a quality one. I have comment guidelines that state what is and isn't allowed in the blog comment field.

If the commenter is addressing some questions in the blog post or just flat out stating there opinion on why the blog author is wrong...etc I call it a quality response if they don't link drop. I hate it when someone posts a quality comment and drops there link in the comment. News flash, add the URL in the website URL field. I know people post comments to build links so i won't approve the sneaky folks who out to get a backlink and not actually wanting to voice there opinion on the blog authors blog post or address previous comments.

Josie Bisett ∙ 1 Jun, 12

Hi Derek,
Thanks for commenting - I agree about the name, I like to see a real name for sure.
I like that you have standards.. they are somewhat higher than mine though! I've never 'disapproved' a comment - I'm thinking you mean delete them altogether..?
Perhaps I would if I had enough of them. I'm still very new to the bloggers' world and as such I'm hesitant to turn my back on ANY feedback - no matter how banal (or disappointing) it may be - unless of course it's downright offensive!
So about the link-dropping... Sometimes it might turn out that a commenter has a very appropriate and useful link, which is directly related to the blog post.

The URL in the website URL field may point them to the website but not to the relevant page in question.
I'm all about networking appropriately - and exchanging information. I just don't like the obvious and irrelevant plugs - which do nothing but offend.

I hope my reply hasn't provoked you enough for me to get bitten Mr Snakeair... ;)

One day though... !

Josie Bisett ∙ 1 Jun, 12

Oops.. the comment 'One day though..!' was supposed to be much higher up in the blurb. I was referring to the day I receive enough comments to be confident in deleting the terrible ones... Damn this tiny reply box!

dennis hodgson ∙ 3 Jun, 12

Hi Derek
I think that you are right to expect commenters to use their real name. Until recently, I allowed anyone to comment, even anonymously, but one of my posts last month attracted a series of anonymous comments that were highly critical of my post. I replied politely, restating my position. After the fourth comment (they were getting increasingly strident) I asked politely that he state his name, and I got a reply that was personally abusive. I'm not sure that this matter has passed, but I've now altered my comment settings to block anonymous comments.

I note that you don't like commenters to drop links into their comments, but Blogspot blogs like mine do not have a separate URL field, so if (and only if) the link is to a post that discusses the same subject, I think it's OK (see my comment above).

Comment's are bloggers wages.. I accept them all :)

Quirky Grandma ∙ 8 Jun, 12

I have been lucky as of yet. I get great comments from people. I have noticed on some that people just say follow me and such. I think that is wrong. I read every post and if I have something to say on the topic. I will say so. I have just said thanks for the laugh, however, when I am juggling Anna, cooking, studying, and reading blogs. Because I love to laugh. But I just want to let them know they did a good job making me laugh when things are hectic.
