WHAT IS AMERICA MISSING?

LA Green

Have you ever sat down and looked at some t.v. shows and often wonder, "What the hell happened?" I did, which his lead me to this talk. I understand that, reality shows are entertainment but it appears were lacking something. I would like to say education but that's not fair; yet at the same time, normally inspiration comes from when we learn. When one learns, inspiration is born. After inspiration then the imagination kicks in, logic, fascination, memory, and etc. In a sense, reality t.v. has some genius behind it, but everyone in America get's extremely upset at people such as honey boo-boo or the Kardashians. Why? Because there famous for nothing; Hollywood has produced nothing to make something. And most people eat it up. I think what your feeling is a lack of creativity. There's more but tell me what you think? So far, creativity and mundane is what I'm feeling from America...

I think America is in satire mode. Full on making fun of itself.

LA Green ∙ 16 weeks ago

@ Tasha. EXACTLY! America knows the problems we face so we laugh at it; in actuality, reality t.v. is a reflection of us. I think some of us do not realize that. So if we think anything in the media is stupid, we need to come to a resolution; I think that one thing we might want to start with before education is morals.

Natasha ∙ 16 weeks ago

Here is some food for thought: Honey Boo Boo is a representation of the poor and trashy side of America, right? Yet, they show strong family morals and consideration for others. They know how to have fun despite how socially awkward people find it. They have the ability to laugh at themselves. Then you have the Kardashians who represent the wealth and so-called classy side of America. The "American Dream", so to speak. Yet, they would sell their souls for publicity and money. They only show compassion for others on the camera. They care about shallow things. Clothes, cars, jewelry, money, image. . . They seem to have it all, yet the only smiles you see on their faces are the fake plastic smiles. Would you care to feed on this?

LA Green ∙ 16 weeks ago

Tasha your correct. Honey Boo Boo from what I have saw appears to be more down to earth; something America needs to model after. The problem: We like money. Being rich and glamorous is something that has been thrown in our face for years now. If we could combine the Kardashians money with a Honey Boo Boo mentality, reality t.v. would die. lol All in all, when people become rich in this country, we feel a need to act like we don't have common sense.

The main thing lacking in the US is appreciation of art. It sounds so silly, but art has almost completely been gutted from schools. Watch TV and watch the jokes about people who don't understand abstract. How many kids enjoy classical music, or grownups for that matter. Entertainment now is drama (in the sense of people being mean to one another) and violence.

That's true...art does lack in this country. America would need that because the creativity side of our brain has appeared to die; although, there are quite a few people who appreciate it but not enough to make a big impact in order for America to make that change. All we need is for someone to skip a rock in this pond in order for the ripples to begin.

dennis hodgson ∙ 16 weeks ago

Perhaps not the main thing Dan, but it's certainly important, and it's certainly lacking. There is some absolute tosh said and written about abstract art in particular, invariably from the point of view of absolute ignorance.

I don't know if you've read my essay "Explanations", which is mainly about how human beings explain natural phenomena, but if you don't want to read the whole thing scroll down to the picture of Jackson Pollock's "Lavender Mist", where you will find an extreme example of utter pig ignorance in relation to Pollock's work:

If one looks at American society through the lens of reality TV programming, many readily available sitcoms, and much of cable broadcasting one might say that morality is lacking and that vice is King.

Hollywood, for a great extent is run by far left progressives thus much programming pokes fun at those with higher moral standards. Hollywood is far too political and many of those pushing their political agenda know very little about political science, much less the lives of the average citizen. They have found a captive audience, many of which don't realize they are pawns being fed a steady diet of Hollyweird ideology and embedded product placement and brand messages.

Also, how about truth in advertising? Product placement is so well integrated that the distinction between editorial and advertisement is blurred. Perhaps the most susceptible are children who are not mature enough to recognize embedded brand messages which operate at perhaps a subconscious level.

It is the world of make believe where the elites set up programming that suits their political agenda and pads their pockets, thus the girl or gal in the $2000 + shoes tells the girl or gal struggling to put food on the table that they are the problem with society, they need to give up more of their freedoms and $$ to an overreaching government while the elites pay lobbyists to insulate them.

America is missing the big brother outlook when it comes to take care of UNO ideology of global peace & understanding .....inorder to track the culprits of WTC attack it has unconsciously cost life of many innocent Muslims & created a hostile environment in the world....we believe that it should review its foreign policy for the sake of world peace .....!

Scarletta ∙ 16 weeks ago

While collateral damage is unacceptable, it is not unconscious, it is unavoidable in war and no policy in the US targets religious group(s) as a target of warfare.

The US is a sovereign nation, governing itself with no law, including any world body, higher than its Constitution.

If Islamic extremists ceased attacking & attempting to control those who do not believe as they do most wars and dangerous political struggles would cease today.

Funny, the US, whose citizens give more to charity and to help others around the world, than any Country in the world are called on worldwide to help with crisis after crisis are vilified, SAD.

G’day Ratesh

The Easterners have been used abused raped & pillaged by Westerners since the crusades; personally I don’t think the big Western powers of today would put up with so much degradation upon their land & people’s for such a long period of time. Westerner’s period need to change their ignorant ways for there to be any hope of a long lasting peace. I’m a Westerner who knows a little about the Western history & the plight it has put upon the world of today.

America is missing common sense.

LA Green ∙ 16 weeks ago

Ok...so what can America do to become better? I mean, sometimes you have to fall in order to see what the problem is; when your number one all the time, it becomes normal and when you become normal, you lose the sight as to why you were number one to begin with; you become blind so to speak. So how can we correct our vision? Remember, the government has the say so but the people are the one's who run this country; without us, there would be no America. If all of us packed our bags today and went to a different country and left the government here, America would would not exists. Here's a thought, Do you think the people are the problem or is it the government? or a combination of both. Feel free to pick either or put your own thoughts in this; if this gets big enough, we might be able to change the outcome of our country; its worth a shot.

Scarletta ∙ 16 weeks ago

American citizens need to hold our representatives accountable and not cave and vote for someone because they have an R or D beside their name on a ballot. Also to be personally responsible instead of looking to the government (tax payers) to provide.

The problem is that once in office most politicians forget their promises and the wishes of their constituents who they represent. Many of them behave more like Lords, Ladies and Kings........... "Elites" (the very system the founders escaped) than representatives. They seem to have forgotten the document that binds us, The Constitution.

As for the people, "Ask Not" has been replaced by redistribution. As long as half or more of the Country are on "the dole" and have the mindset that they deserve for the works of others to be redistributed to them our Country will sink deeper an deeper in debt and fiscally conservative candidates will have a difficult time being elected.

In sum, citizens and the government need to practice personal responsibility. i.e. If a business or family has less funds coming in than can cove their debuts the answer is not to run up huge debts on credit cards, the answer is belt tightening and looking for ways to budget and do with less, not more, but the government works in the reverse.

The cult of celebrity, the adulation of people who are famous merely for being famous, is a cancer that will eventually destroy a society.

G'day LA Green

What the US is missing as a whole is true democracy as we do in Australia however if we are just talking about specifics the people of the US need to be more down to Earth not this fake fluffy stuff that glitters, there is nothing more rewarding & transpiring than being yourself instead of what others expect you to be.

I have a B.A. in Political Science. We need a young, newly improved Congress!

LA Green ∙ 16 weeks ago

I'm glad that people from other countries are responding to this thread; sometimes when its in your face, you can't see what the problem is. I think America needs to focus on one thing at a time. First, we have to find the biggest reason. I think education is something we lack in this country; or something we ignore. I think a good IQ boost for our nation would put us back on track. How would we go about getting America back on the education track? Are we pushing our kids hard enough? Or are we showing our kids, you can become famous and rich without education? We need our leaders back, someone whose of inspiration; I think Obama has been inspiration in the black community but that's only one community; we need to touch every community in order for America to be one again...thoughts?

Scarletta ∙ 16 weeks ago

Good points. Leading by example would be a good start. If parents are sitting in front "reality tv" instead of showing an interest in the education of their children then the primary mentors become the media, teachers, and their peer group.

Encouraging children in the studies and becoming involved and making sure they are receiving the best possible education as opposed to indoctrination. Also, utilizing free time to teach children life skills such as cooking, balancing a checkbook, working out, changing a tire, basic woodwork, home economy would not only help the situation but teach children to glean self esteem from accomplishment v. clothing labels and self reliance v. waiting for Mom and Dad or tax payers (redistribution) to pay way into adulthood.

As far as our president, although hey may have inspired some, he has also encouraged class warfare and dependence and people are more divided down D's and R's than ever before. (full disclosure I'm not a D nor an R)

LA Green ∙ 16 weeks ago

Okay check this out America and the world; but mainly America, since we the people make up this nation, I think we need to look within; meaning check our surroundings first. If your a parent, this might be a easier; if your a teacher, your right on the money. Our children are the future. We need to some how make them understand; we need to connect to them. I know for a lot of people, sagging pants might be a stupid style but when you display that emotion, your pushing away instead of getting closer; some of these children have great minds; just caught up in the era of how clothes are being worn. Instead of dividing the gap of generations, try coming in close, understanding, then showing wisdom. Most children follow a style due to influence...I know its a far out thought, BUT becoming closer again, may actually work; to understand doesn't mean to agree...

I think the reason for the lack of creativity in American television is a complicated one. Hollywood and many major TV networks don't make creativity a priority, but instead look to extensively-researched demographic data to find out what will be the most generically pleasing.

To be creative is to be unique & original. Unfortunately, the audience reception of original concepts can't be charted, and is avoided because it probably deemed as too much of a risk. I suppose the corporate nature of network giants is to blame.

LA Green ∙ 16 weeks ago

@ Annes I do wonder if the giant networks are to blame; but these giant networks are also the ones that made star shows like the Fresh Prince. In the early 00s reality t.v. began to takeover and it seems to have stayed that way; unless you have cable. Well anyways with the country going into a recession, reality t.v. on the rise, and technology having a complete dominance on everything we do, has made us desperate; we have to follow someone or like someone; we have to text someone vs calling them. I'm not too worried about what message it sends to children but I am. I don't think there's anything wrong with texting and social networking sites; a little concerned about reality t.v. BUT I'm worried that individualism is about to die; thus killing creativity.

Natasha ∙ 16 weeks ago

@Matthew *sigh* I can't help wondering from your discussions whether you have actually met an American. A true American. Have you ever visited America? "Fake fluffy stuff"? You are referring to a minority of our population sweetheart. Most Americans are NOT made of "fake, fluffy stuff". Do you know what the majority of the people in the southern state of Georgia are like? We are sweet tea drinking, t-shirt and jean wearing, hard working, say hi to a stranger, love your neighbor, defend your family with honor, "bless her/his heart" saying, friend to our enemies, country kind of people predominately. Yes, there are some "fake fluffy" assholes scattered here and there, but that is about it. Frankly, you're stereotyping is getting a little tiresome. How would you like it if I told you to pull your dungarees out of a bunch and hop on your Kangaroo and go play in a sandbox? Sterotyping isn't very fun is it?

Natasha ∙ 16 weeks ago

That should be *your, not *you're. My brain is not communicating with my fingers for some reason.

And I have heard people say that a true democracy is anarchy. Anyone care to feed on that one?

LA Green ∙ 2 weeks 5 days ago

So, I asked this question 14 weeks ago and wondered what is America missing? Since America is apart of the world, what is that different countries can do to differ outcome? I mean sure, most want to blame America but let's get down to the core of it, it takes two to tango, it takes wings to fly, basically saying there's cause and reaction..unless America is the cause and reaction within it's self...what's your opinion?

What would you like to say?
