I'm rather new to this community and wanted to know what people's opinions are on what makes a great blog? what is it about a person's blog that makes you want to read on or follow?
- An attractive homepage?
- What type of content interests you?

More me what attracts me to a blog first is really the homepage and that its not jammed with like adverts, but they tend to put me off it reading as you get constant pop ups or a flashing image as you read lol
And as everyone says good content is the way forward, but be yourself and choose something you like and want to write about 8)

The whole design aspect would probably be the first thing that will make a person stay. So yeah, like the above poster said, it shouldn't be totally spammed with ads although 1 or 2 is ok in my opinion.
What will make your readers stay and come back though is gonna be solid content.
So just like with how we judge potential relationship partners.
It's the looks usually that can draw us in but if the substance isn't there, we usually jump on to the next person who we think is better.

The templates converts. If you have a good and well arranged template, I will obviously like your blog. I also do not like pop-up ads or a blog containing too many adds at all corners of the template. A portion can be assigned to that.
Another thing that makes a good blog is the quality of the content it contains. No one would like to read crap or some copy and paste stuff seen almost everywhere. Just be simply, and provide quality unique contents. People would automatically like your blog.
Good topic! I'd have to say that the posting regularly/daily is important to me. I'm more likely to follow a blogger that posts often.
I also prefer when someone posts photographs they've taken themselves. It makes a blog feel more authentic, and personal.
Personality is really important. If you don't come across in your posts, then I don't find them interesting - regardless of the content.
Be yourself and find a topic that interests you and keeps your interest. My husband can sense my sarcasm and dry humor when he reads my posts. Yesterday I made a 1970s Sears Coldspot refrigerator promotional booklet funny. I prefer to read blogs that I can feel come from the heart. Mine are completely from my heart. I very rarely use a pic from somewhere else. Every picture in my blog was scanned, cropped, edited, etc from me.
I'm not trying to sell anything or get you to sign up for anything. I'm not even doing it for money. I just want you to read my work and keep coming back!! Apparently it's working because I get a lot of compliments and messages about what my next subject is going to be. It's all about delivery!!

I am the newbie in blog world, maybe it will be my motivation to build my blog. Like I ever read in some forum, the forum said if we want make good blog, we have to know what the other want, we have to make our position as the reader of the blog.
For me, what makes a good blog is the content. If a person is blogging about things that you're interested in, that to you will be a great blog but perhaps not to others simply because they are not interested in what the blogger has to say about certain things.
Also, the personality of the blogger! I love reading blogs that makes me laugh and at the same time makes me think!
As a designer myself, I will say what makes a great blog is the design and layout. No matter how great and unique your contents might look or sound, what people see first before even reading your contents is your graphics, your designs, your layouts!
Content also makes your blog stand out ...but please always make sure you place your article's image properly. Bloggers should know when to place an image right, left and center.
As other people have mentioned, too many ads can kill your blog. I personally don't like people embedding ads right in their contents. Always use your sidebar, header or footer for ads placement. Dont interrupt your readers with ads!
