I'm not so interested in getting the highest number of visitors as I am on interacting with whoever reads my blog. I write about what I dream (literally), and for me it would be really useful to know what others dream, or interpret about what I write, etc.
SO, I think maybe Twitter would be a good option...but should I create an account straight away after creating the blog, or wait until I have a solid group of followers?
And....does it work?

I would create one straight away as it would help increase your followers! Target people who write about dreams a lot by doing a word search in twitter! :D

Twitter is a beast unto itself, BUT amazingly helpful once you learn it well. On my blog, we write about all aspects of life and love, and whatever we feel like writing about. On top of that, I have poetry on friday, and a serial webfiction on Saturday. Twitter has been amazing in helping me promote, because of hashtags and such. Say you put in the hashtag #poem or #poetry. People have those set up to automatically feed into what they are reading. Through those hashtags, I've found that I have been linked to on poetry websites....
Its a wonderful way to really promote your blog, with very limited space. There are tons of tips and tricks to twitter, and the sooner you start the better, as you can experiment at the beginning. Find your voice on there, see if you want to send out little updates about silliness, or about the blog, about what you are writing, or ideas, or just promoting the blog.... Twitter is fast, and interesting, I personally still don't like it, but I use it to the best of my abilities, and still need to learn to use it better, now matter how much traffic I'm already generating from it.
That is some useful experience :) I don't like Twitter either, so I think that's why I'm so lazy about it! But I think it will be a great promotion tool if I manage to learn how to use it properly!
It most definitely is, but you have to spend time to learn it. And there are many tools to use if you learn it right. In the end, its part of my daily networking routine, and I spend as much time on twitter, scheduling posts, and setting up retweets, as I do on social media sites joining in discussions and forum posts.
