From search engine people visit sites without knowing the outlook but the content. Content is important. If readers find it worse/hard to read your content they wont come again even if content is excellent. Outlook is important. Repeated readers give up when they face difficulties to explore the content even if outlook and content is cool. Usability and navigation is important.

One more point is that everyday people read newspaper and how many times they notice or bother the outlook? Better design is that design that doesn't let the reader notice the design. Still cool outlook impress us a lot.

Should take care of them where possible: content, outlook and the way those content and outlook presented.

I'd say about 75% contents and 25% look. The contents would be what will grab the readers attention and urge them to come back and keep on reading your posts. But then, the site should also be easy to navigate and easy to read... the colors, size and style of fonts should make reading easy and comfortable.

If we want to be honest we always first notice looks, in life and online. After that comes content. I would like it's opposite, but that's real.

Content. Search engines don't find things based on design. Then design matters. NEVER use light text on black background for example, it's hard to read and bothers the eyes. I never go back no matter what the content if a site is hard to look at.

Judderman ∙ 29 Apr, 11

couldn't disagree more with your second point. I find lightish text on dark/black background the easiest on my eyes and to read - even at work I have black background - guess we're all different.

I also think dark backgrounds (pref black or dark blue) make for a very classy/stylish/timeless colou scheme.

Flashy crap only pisses me off when it lacks any real substance. It's like watching a Michael Mann movie

Judderman ∙ 29 Apr, 11

I instantly click away from flashy sites - it hurts the eyes and look stunningly cheap/tacky and nasty - cut the shouting, dancing and fireworks and give us good content presented stylishly and subtly and you have my attention.

NikkiSiixx ∙ 25 Apr, 11

I don't think I can choose which one will be effective because when you have both it really captures an audience. If you have a great looking site but your content doesn't keep up with the standards of how your site looks, then there's something wrong and vice-versa. If you have great content but your site is not appealing to the eye then no one is really going to stay to look around, even if the content is great.

Shaan ∙ 25 Apr, 11

Its always content first...If you got great content then reader will have no option than to visit your blog even if the design sucks and readers dont like the design. But if you got poor quality content with a great design then nobody is gonna visit your blog more than one time for sure

Judderman ∙ 29 Apr, 11

wrong, wrong, wrong. It is both - with content first...but if you have superb content but I hate the design - brash colours/difficult to read content - I will within 3 seconds click away and never return.

Shaan ∙ 30 Apr, 11

@Judderman Lol... It means that you dont look for the quality content then and dont appreciate it

Prad B ∙ 25 Apr, 11

The best sites aren't the best looking and the best looking aren't the most interactive..So go with content first & add colors to it later..hope it helps.

design a support web content, the easier the access the more likely people are reading content on the web. while the content is the essence of a web, both areas are equally important

Mood Design ∙ 26 Apr, 11

For me if the look is not right then the contnet is often not read, but also if the content is rubbish the site will not be revisited.

Ease of use is important bacause if your visiters cannot find the info they are after they will not return or engage your services.

Jonathan Beckett ∙ 26 Apr, 11

Content rules. Totally. The look doesn't matter beyond making it easy to read.

MARIE CALVIN ∙ 28 Apr, 11

I feel both are important, if a site looks good it will catch our eyes but if the content is interesting then we are more apt to learn more about it and possibly get involved.

looks make the website attractive n appealing whereas contents make it wort while!!!

Kira Permunian ∙ 28 Apr, 11

alright, they have said it all. For me, when it comes to the design and content, you must first and foremost follow the usability standards in blogging. By doing so, you will be cleared on what to do next to produce a user friendly web design and a useful content.

Homer ∙ 1 May, 11

content is the heart on site and other things are not so mandatory.

Would you ever visit a site with awesome look but no content in it? :-)

EGeeKBee ∙ 1 May, 11

for me, both.

JUNO CAWAN ∙ 25 Dec, 11

for me both but theres a saying first impression last, so ill go for the design

DylanJames ∙ 6 Feb, 12

It's all about the content. 85% content and 25% Design. You need to have the good content to attract the visitors to even see the design. Just my opinion.

Khadijat Yussuff ∙ 28 weeks ago

I'm a little late on the thread, but definitely design. A lot of people will take the time to go through content, especially if it's obviously media based, such as lots of high-quality pictures. However, if the layout is too cluttered or flashy, or your header is inappropriately places and your blog title's name is misspelled, it deters people from even wanting to see how good your content may be.
Then again, once they get to your content, you don't want it to be horrible, because they'll stop reading it immediately.
Design is more appropriate for attracting readers, and the quality of content is more appropriate for maintaining them.

Design will be very important to keep me on a site but the content is what makes me click on it in the first place + what might keep me even if the design isn't good.

So I think both are really important together, having a good design and good content will really help your blog forward :)

Digital Desperado ∙ 28 weeks ago

Design is content.

Everything on your blog/website is content.

Zee Oh ∙ 23 weeks ago

design is just superficial. i'd say content.

A Brainless Nod ∙ 23 weeks ago

If I were to say, I'd give it 60% Content, 40% design. Mainly because if I hit a site and it looks godawful, I will NOT read that content.

Matt Morales ∙ 23 weeks ago

Content is more important but I would not read it if it's unreadable. You know what I mean, I should be pleasant in our eyes.

Nepspeed ∙ 23 weeks ago

Content comes first. That's how search engines index you and how people find you. Then look follows, your visitors will stay longer if they can navigate through your site with ease and find other interesting stuff that you can offer.

LauraALifeWithFrills ∙ 20 weeks ago

The content! As people will read it in different ways like RSS feeds in readers etc so won't really see the design all the time!

Denna ∙ 20 weeks ago

Both, I wont read a blog with a horrible layout or bad pictures
But amazing context is what makes me come back.

Phil M ∙ 20 weeks ago

You need to get the balance right i have personally found. Your content is what should be taking readers to your blog in the first place so you need to have great content but design is also very important. You design makes your blog look professional and more trustworthy if your design is better and also makes your blog more recognizable.

Furita ∙ 19 weeks ago

Both are very important materials for a blog but normally the first thing I look at when visiting a new blog is the design of the blog page, if its bad then it does put me off from reading it a bit... and I sure its like that for quite a few visitors too.

However the content has to be good as well because having a excellent page design and then terrible content... your attracting your readers to stay.
