I am a writer/musician from Toronto Canada and I have an obsession. My obsession is a seventeenth century scientist named Robert Hooke. You may have heard of Hooke, but you probably don’t know much about him. Though he was one of the most important scientists of all time, there is no existing portrait of Robert Hooke. That is because Hooke was erased by Isaac Newton. Newton burned the only known portrait of Robert Hooke. This is a historical fact.
Why did Newton do this? Because Robert Hooke was the person who gave Newton the idea that the force of gravity was what is called an inverse square, meaning that the force of gravity diminishes in the proportion of an inverse square of the distance from the earth. Hooke had a dispute with Newton over this. Hooke was also the first person to create a wind up watch, a watch run on a tightened spring, though he is not officially credited with it. I’ve been researching this guy for many years now. He was Newton’s rival and Newton erased him from history as much as he could.
I am a creative writer however, not a historian, so I have been writing a piece of literature about Robert Hooke. I want Hooke to become a culture hero. My goal is to make a mini-series out of my novel, on the BBC. It’s just a dream, but it seems like a good goal to have.
